The roar of engines that has echoed through Summit County for generations is threatening to go silent. For local auto racing enthusiasts, the news coming out of Norton, Ohio, is a heavy blow: Norton Raceway Park, a historic pillar of the Northern Ohio motorsports landscape, faces a grim and increasingly uncertain future. With the current owner set to auction off much of the facility’s equipment and fixtures, the prospect of racing returning to this iconic short track is fading fast.
The potential closure of a track like this isn’t just the loss of a business; it’s the loss of a weekend tradition, a community gathering space, and a piece of Ohio’s automotive history.

The Auction: Dismantling a Local Legend
Following the unexpected passing of former owner Greg Prunty in 2022 and the subsequent sale of the 75-year-old facility in late 2025, the track’s survival has been hanging by a thread. Now, the reality of the situation is setting in.
The decision to auction off the track’s vital equipment and fixtures signals a hard stop for the venue as a turnkey racing facility.
- Infrastructure at Risk: Items essential to running a race weekend—from track prep equipment and safety barriers to concession fixtures—are reportedly heading to the auction block.
- A Steep Climb for Buyers: While the land itself remains, stripping the facility of its operational equipment means any future buyer wanting to resurrect the track will face exorbitant startup costs to replace what is being sold off.
- Business Reality: Short track racing operates on incredibly thin margins. The combination of probate struggles, zoning controversies, and the sheer cost of modernizing an older facility has unfortunately overwhelmed the passion trying to keep the gates open.

Ohio’s Oldest Paved Oval
Losing Norton Raceway Park—formerly known to many as Barberton Speedway—is a historic loss. Established in 1948, it holds the prestigious title of being the oldest paved oval in Ohio.
For over seven decades, this quarter-mile bullring has been a proving ground. It survived eras of massive change in motorsports, outlasting many of its regional peers. To see the oldest paved oval in the state potentially reduced to an empty lot or redeveloped is a harsh reality check on the fragility of local historical sites.
The Void Left in the Local Racing Community
The most profound impact of Norton Raceway Park’s grim future falls squarely on the shoulders of the local racing community. This track provided accessible, short-track racing within a short drive of Akron, Canton, and Cleveland.
- The Drivers: For working-class drivers, Norton was a place where they could affordably build, tune, and race their cars in divisions like the Compacts or Late Models without having to haul their trailers hundreds of miles.
- The Crews and Families: Racing at Norton has always been a family affair. Generations of families have grown up in the paddocks, turning wrenches and celebrating hard-fought victories together.
- The Fans: Dedicated fans and lifelong track workers have treated Norton as a second home. The stands were a place of camaraderie where you knew the person sitting next to you, week in and week out.
- The Regional Landscape: With the recent struggles and closures of other regional tracks, the loss of Norton severely limits the options for Northern Ohio’s grassroots racing scene.

While the ultimate fate of the property remains to be written, the auctioning of its lifeblood makes it incredibly difficult to picture race cars taking the green flag there again. It is a stark reminder to cherish and support local short tracks while they are still here.
