Racing fans across the region will have to wait a little longer for the roar of the engines and the smell of racing fuel. On Saturday, April 18th, the undisputed winner across the local short-track circuit wasn’t a late-model hotshot or a sprint car veteran—it was Mother Nature.
Widespread weather systems forced track officials to throw the red flag before the haulers even entered the gates, leaving grandstands empty and racecars parked in the shops.
The Ohio Washouts
In Ohio, a slew of highly anticipated events were scrubbed from the weekend calendar. Track management at four major regional venues were forced to make the tough call to pull the plug on their scheduled Saturday night programs due to the relentless spring elements:
- Toledo Speedway
- Fremont Speedway
- Wayne County Speedway
- Midvale Speedway

Opening Day Spoiled in PA
The reach of the spring showers extended across state lines, spoiling opening day festivities in Pennsylvania as well. Michaels Mercer Raceway was slated to host its much-anticipated season opener, bringing fans back to the dirt for the first time this year. Unfortunately, the saturated grounds left officials with no choice but to postpone the high-octane kickoff.
Looking Ahead to Next Weekend
While the clay and asphalt remain quiet this weekend, teams, drivers, and track crews are already shifting gears for a rebound. The focus has swiftly shifted to getting the tracks prepped for better weather.
Fremont Speedway, Wayne County Speedway, and Midvale Speedway are all resetting their sights, looking to officially open their gates and get their racing seasons underway next weekend. Until then, local race teams will have a few extra days to turn wrenches and wait for the sun to shine. Sharon Speedway will host it’s 97th Anniversary Opening Night on Saturday, April 25th.
