Fast Cars & Freedom at Mid Ohio

Jim Foose – Speedway Action Magazine

Between the blistering heat, a splash of summer rain, and an absolutely packed house, the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio Presented by the 2027 CR-V Hybrid delivered a fittingly dramatic celebration for America’s 250th birthday. From the packed midway to the grid walk, open to the public this year, the Mid Ohio crowd likely bumped Lexington, OH into the top 15 largest populations in the state, at least for the day.

For Mid Ohio, which has hosted the NTT IndyCar Series each year since 2007, the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio Presented by the 2027 CR-V Hybrid is the biggest event of the calendar for the 2.25 mile course,

Fans have been attending races at Mid Ohio since the track opened in 1962, with the IndyCar Series first visiting the facility in 1980. A two year absence from 1982-1983 led to the return of IndyCar racing from 1984 through 2003, when the track fell off the CART schedule before being picked up by the IndyCar Series in 2007.

The Mid-Ohio Faithful Show Out

If you want to understand the heartbeat of Midwest motorsports, you don’t just look at the grandstands—you look at the campgrounds.

The energy in the infield and surrounding campsites rivaled the wheel-to-wheel action on the 2.25-mile road course. On race day, a packed infield crowd flooded the turns 4-5-6 complex, completely filling the sweeping hillside with a vibrant patchwork of camping chairs and blankets. Fans arrived early and loud, turning the rolling hills into a sprawling, patriotic festival to celebrate the Semiquincentennial.

“We’ve been coming here for generations and this could be the largest crowd I can remember being here in the past thirty years” said Akron native Rob, who was attending the race with his son, Jacob.

Even with the mercury climbing and sporadic rain showers threatening to dampen the mood, the massive crowds simply threw on ponchos, cracked another cold one, and stayed glued to the fence. The weather did absolutely nothing to thin out a crowd that was ready to celebrate Independence Day weekend the right way: with speed.

The weather, which did hit the Mid Ohio area with rain and thunderstorms Friday and Saturday, played nice on Sunday, with only a few stray raindrops falling early in the day.

Arrow McLaren’s Masterclass

When it came time to navigate the heavy braking zones and sweeping elevation changes of Mid-Ohio, Arrow McLaren put on a clinic.

Pato O’Ward was electric, finding grip where others couldn’t and managing his tires masterfully through the shifting track conditions. He ultimately secured a hard-fought victory, but he had to look over his shoulder the entire way. His fiercest competition came from inside his own camp, with teammate Christian Lundgaard pushing him to the absolute limit.

“It’s been a year, it’s been a tough one for sure,” O’Ward said. “I think today is just a perfect example of execution. I waited for the perfect time pounce and from there we just controlled it.”

Lundgaard’s aggressive pursuit made for a phenomenal show, proving that team orders take a backseat when a historic victory is on the line. But O’Ward’s defense was flawless, allowing him to take the checkered flag and spray the champagne in front of an ecstatic Ohio crowd.

Between the fierce intra-team battle, the patriotic fervor in the campgrounds, and the sheer resilience of the fans, this year’s Indy 200 is one that will be talked about at Mid-Ohio for years to come.

The fans were treated to 90 laps of uninterrupted racing as the race ran green to checkered for the first time in six years at Mid Ohio. Fans were left wanting more as the battled between Arrow McLaren teammates to the checkered flag, coupled with Rinus Veekay’s underdog run to fourth in the #76 car kept the massive crowd on their feet for much of the afternoon.
