Get to Know Charlie Schultz

Charlie Schultz has been a fixture in Ohio Open Wheel Racing for 20 years, the driver of the #9 Must See Racing National 410 Sprint Car is a contender every time he straps in a racecar – ANY racecar! We had a chance to catch up with Charlie several times in 2024 as he raced just about anything with wheels.

How did you get involved in racing?

Through my dad. He had a engine building business and we had alot of local racers as customers. Including super modified drivers Joe Grunda and Randy Wynn as well as late model driver Rick Groetsch Jr Got to spend alot of time with great drivers and was able to get started in karts at 12 years old had alot of great teachers over the years

How long have you been racing?  Why did you choose the number you race?

34 years racing. I originally started with #7 in my early karting days and went to a track where someone already had #7 so it became #9.

What’s your favorite race track you’ve raced on?

I’ve been fortunate to have raced at alot of places. I’d say of the big car tracks the now-closed Rockford Speedway was a blast.

What kind of hobbies outside of the racecar do you have?

I do enjoy bowling and golf every now and then. Playing cards with family and friends and a 3-year-old grandson keeps me busy as well away from the races.

Do you have a workout plan that you follow to keep yourself in top shape for race day?

I’m alot like John Daly, I do enjoy my Miller Lites. But staying active helps as well.

Did you have any racing heroes growing up?

Locally I’d say Rick Groetsch and Tim Ice. On a national level would be hard to say. I like the guys who are gassers and get up on the wheel.

What’s your favorite racing memory…

Probably winning my first sprint car race at Mansfield
As well as my first win in the Shullick #61 car
King of Wings winner in the May #7
Then winning the Must See Championship in 2022

What is your greatest accomplishment in racing?

I think the fact that I have raced for so many different owners in different divisions and at over 75 different tracks in both the United States and Canada

Do you have any raceday rituals or superstitions?

I do have a couple pairs of underwear that I typically will wear on race weekends and I almost always shave my face the night before racing.

What are your plans for 2025?

I’m looking to chase the full Must See Racing schedule in the 410 (Sprint Car) and see what else comes up.

Anyone you want to thank for getting you here?

Definitely my parents. A big thanks to my wife Debbie. So many friends and family that have supported me along the years

Do you have a regular job, and if so what do you do?

I work as a machinist and Fabricator at Greber Machine Tool in Elyria
