The real-world green flag might still be a week away, but sim racers are getting the jump. As of today, the highly anticipated Qualcomm Circuit at Naval Base Coronado is officially live on iRacing, dropping just in time for the Season 3 build.
If you’ve been itching to see what NASCAR’s newest street course looks and feels like, your wait is over. Grab your wheel, because this track is 3.4 miles of pure, unadulterated chaos and speed.
From Blueprint to Sim to Reality
When NASCAR dropped the bombshell announcement last year that they were taking the Cup Series to an active military base in San Diego, the hype was instantaneous. But building a street course from scratch on a naval base is no small feat.
To pull it off, NASCAR enlisted the digital heavyweights at iRacing. Over the last year, iRacing didn’t just scan an existing track—they helped NASCAR design, prototype, test, and iterate the actual course layout in the sim. The result? A digital playground that was perfected before the real-world barriers even went up. And in true iRacing fashion, they are letting the community loose on the track a full week before the NASCAR Cup Series stars tackle the Anduril 250 Race the Base.
16 Turns of Unforgiving Mayhem
So, what are you getting yourself into? The Qualcomm Circuit is not your average street course. It’s a 16-turn, 3.4-mile beast that demands total focus.
Here is what makes this track a unique monster:
- Differing Grip Levels: You’ll be flying down high-grip, ultra-smooth runway concrete one second, only to slam the brakes and transition onto bumpy, low-grip asphalt base streets the next. These sudden, violent handling shifts will snap the car loose if you aren’t ready for them.
- Breathing Room: Unlike some claustrophobic street circuits where passing is nearly impossible, Coronado was designed to let you actually race. The wide runways and distinct passing zones give you the space to dive-bomb your buddies into the heavy braking zones.
- The “Carrier Corner”: Turn 5 will have you hooking a sharp left-right between the docking locations of massive naval vessels.
The Ultimate Scenery
You’re going to want to check your mirrors, and not just for the guy drafting you. The environment team at iRacing absolutely nailed the atmosphere. You’ll be screaming past massive military airplane hangars, parked aircraft, and yes—an actual aircraft carrier docked in the background. It is a one-of-a-kind visual experience that makes you feel like you’ve driven straight onto the set of Top Gun.
Whether you are an oval purist looking to test your road-course chops or a seasoned sports car driver ready to wrangle a heavy stock car around the San Diego bay, the Qualcomm Circuit is going to test your limits.
The track is live now. Fire up the sim, hit the runway, and try to keep it out of the tire barriers.
